Working with masks in Adobe Illustrator Tutorial

A few weeks ago, Computer Arts magazine published a PDF tutorial about various clipping and opacity masking techniques in Adobe Illustrator.
"Ben the Illustrator shows you the range of brilliant features hidden within your masking tools.
A mask might appear to be just a simple tool for covering something up, but Adobe Illustrator’s masking tools offer far more than one basic use. Along with the Compound Path, Illustrator’s Clipping and Opacity Masks can take your illustration and design onto a new level of detail, precision, texture and shape. To know when to use each tool, you simply need a clear understanding of what each one does." Full tutorial & source files.

Best Maui Beaches

Aloha to all our Best Hawaii Vacation blog visitors,
What did you think of Keoki's unique Mauna Kea Summit Adventure? Wasn't that something different to do on a Hawaii vacation?! Well, as you can you see a Big Island vacation is not 'just' a beach vacation, even though we really love our Mauna Kea Beach and Hapuna Beach - best and most popular white sand beaches of the Big island - a Big Island vacation is all about adventure, many beyond the ordinary like visiting our live Volcano Kilauea at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

If the choices are adventure or beaches, we must admit the big majority of Hawaii visitors vacation in Hawaii for its beaches. Is there anybody who can resist a pristine white sandy beach embraced by the exotic fragrances of Hawaiian flowers? Not me! So, when family plans are made for the next Hawaii vacation, it's all about booking a hotel or Hawaii vacation rental, as close as possible to the beach. Whatever Hawaiian island tourists are visiting, their most asked question is 'Where are the best beaches?'. The Hawaiian island which is most well-known of its beaches, is without any question Maui.

So when our friend Julie from Ideal Vacation rentals, one of our guest author of Best Hawaii Vacation Blog and Maui expert, started her new Maui Vacation Guide blog with her first post 'Favorite Maui Beaches', I decided to let her be the expert on Best Maui Beaches. She tells you all about Maui beaches from the perspective of a Maui visitor: best snorkel spots, closeness to Maui resorts and hotels and even shows you some Maui beach photos. Here is the beginning of her 'Maui beach' blog post:

"It is a fact that Maui beaches are rated among the best in the world, and water sports are unsurpassed. Kaanapali Beach is one of our favorite beaches, and here you can either walk for miles on the sand, or take a leisurely stroll along a pathway, which extends from the Hyatt, through Whaler's Village and ends up at the Sheraton Hotel. Black Rock, a popular snorkeling spot with a nice sandy beach is directly in front of the Sheraton.

If you cut through the Sheraton, the walkway continues and goes to Kahekili Beach Park (formerly called airport beach). There is good reef just to the right, in front of the Maui Westin Resort. Here we have seen green sea turtles, lots of colorful fish, octopus and moray eels. The nice thing about this beach, is that because it is a state park it has washrooms, showers, picnic tables, BBQ pits and a large parking lot."

Go visit 'Maui Vacation Guide' for reading Julie's entire bog post on best Maui beaches, including beaches in Kapalua, Napili, Kihei, Wailea, Kaanapali and Makena. Any thoughts on your favorite Maui Beach? We'd love to hear them. Mahalo, Pua Hawaii Vacations

You were wondering who the sexy girl on the beach in Hawaii is. Easy to answer. It's beautiful Amber from WahineStyle.

Switching Between CMYK and RGB Color Modes in Adobe Illustrator

In the articles section of iStockphoto.com, I found a great material about using color modes when working with vectors.
The article explains how to find out what is the color mode that you are currently using (CMYK vs RGB), how to change it and when. If you are not familiar with using color swatches in Adobe Illustrator, you may consider checking it out too. Full Article

Interview With Sharon Perlinger

Sharon Perlinger is a James Town Royal who has spent twenty years of her life in Austria. She comes across as a model, even a movie star. There is a poise about her that enthralls those around her. She lives in an amazing edifice located in East Legon part of Accra. OVATION spoke to her about love, religion, style and travels.

Where were you born

I was born in Ghana, James Town. When was that
That was in April, a few years ago. A lady's secret is her age

Can you tell us a little bit about your background, family and how you grew up

I grew up mostly in Kumasi. I went to school in Kumasi; I started in Primary and from there to Accra Girls Secondary School. I then left for Europe to do my secretarial course but before that I did a little of my secretarial course in YWCA where I met my first fiancé, who died in a car crash. He was half Lebanese and half Ghanaian. We had a girl together. I later got married to an Austrian. I was introduced to him sometime in April and by December we got married. We were married for about 15 years and got divorced. I had another girl with him so in all, I have two girls. I lived in Austria for about 23 years.

Did you attend a modeling or fashion school as well

Yes I did fashion. When I was in Austria, I had one of the nicest modeling schools in Austria; it was called Isher Modisgesher and I ran it for about five years. I was at the time building this house and since fashion involves a lot of money, I had to put it on hold for a while to concentrate on building the house. Unfortunately, the architects misused a lot of my money so I had to leave Austria to come back to Ghana to finish my house. But I had a very successful fashion institution in Austria for about five years.

What exactly were you doing there in Austria

I was doing fashion shows with Vestige, especially for evening wears. I was one of the few black ladies in Austria who was noticed. Anytime I had a fashion show, it was on the Austrian Television and they always classified me with the Princess of Monaco because I am also a princess. So anytime they talked about my fashion show, they would refer to me as a princess from Africa.

Would you attribute your success in fashion to your training in fashion/modeling or did it have anything to do with family heritage

Yes, my mother was a very elegant lady and my daddy had a lot of children. He had 10 with my mother and 10 outside the family. It was a big family and my mummy was really a mother. She taught us how to cook and take care of the home although we had all the necessary help around. She wanted us to become women when we grew up. I believe I am a woman of the house no matter how it is, I am a good housewife. I am not bragging, but this is what I do best. I am also good at business but not like a mother. Taking care of the home, family, and entertaining people; that's me and I think my family and friends would agree to that.

You were into fashion in Austria, what do you do in Ghana

At the moment I have started some projects. I am also doing the star scape project. Before coming to Ghana, I was doing some charity in Austria. I was in a society that helped the Eastern Bloc when there was war in Yugoslavia; we did some charity work to help the people there. I was the only African lady among them and I was doing so well. So when I came to Ghana, I said to myself, I did all these things there, so why don't I do something like that for my country? So I set up my philanthropist work, I started cooking and hosting soup kitchens for orphanages and hospitals.

Mauna Kea Summit Adventure

Well, here we go again. We hope we got the attention of Big Island visitors, who are in search of adventure on their Big Island vacation, with yesterday's post 'Mauna Kea Volcano'. A visit to Mauna Kea Summit for Stargazing or Sunset or Sunrise is definitely a 'must' for Big Island adventure 'hunters'. If we intrigued your curiosity with Keoki's beginning of his story of 'Mauna Kea Summit Adventure', a different kind that is, please, keep reading about his exciting activity on the White Mountain:

Mauna Kea Summit at Sunset
"Of course when living in Hawai'i, who owns winter clothing?! You can't go play in the snow in flip-flops, so you make do with what you have. I had an old pair of rubber boots, a few layers of socks, a couple layers of pants, t-shirts and layered sweat shirts, and I was ready to go. Some friends had a 4-wheel drive land rover, so four of us packed up some beer and snacks and of course, boogie boards. Boogie boards aren't just for surfing the ocean waves, as you will find out soon.

The road to the top is kept clear except in heavy storms which can blow in at a moments notice. We went up during the week - not much traffic except the obversatory workers and a few other fools like us. There must have been 3-4 feet of snow at the top on the day we were there.

Mauna Kea at its summit is over 14,000ft. which makes breathing difficult during any exercise. Of course, you can stand around doing nothing but that's no fun. The best place to 'snow surf' Mauna Kea summit is this bowl just below the summit. There is a run of 300 yards or so and you end at the bottom near the road. You gotta watch out for boulders sticking out of the snow though. On our fist run we tried walking back up to the top and soon found ourselves light headed and in danger of altitude sickness. The boggie boards worked great and we didn't want to give it up after the long drive to the top.

We decided to take turns driving, picking up the guys at the bottom and shuttling them back to the top. The sun was blazing the whole time, so we kept pretty warm. However for guys used to living in the tropic warmth after a couple hours and the cold crept into our bones and it was time to, as they say in Hawai'i, to hele on.

One thing nice about snow surfing in Hawai'i: When you are done, an hour later you can be ocean surfing on a white sand beach, which we did."

During the winter months in Hawaii, one won't only find teenagers sliding down snowy stretches of Mauna Kea summit on boogie boards or inner tubes, but skiers give it a try too. You got to be well conditioned, experienced and know the terrain though when skiing downhill on Mauna Kea. However, watching these daredevils is an experience Big Island visitors will remember for years to come when telling friends about their Big Island vacation. What's your favorite story about your visit to Mauna Kea summit and obersatories? Mahalo, Pua Hawaii Vacations

How better can you get an idea how things are high up on the mountain on top of the world than with a somebody's own experience! Here is Keoki's personal encounter with his Mauna Kea summit adventure:

Sunset over Big Island at Mauna Kea Summit
"I don't remember what year it was, sometime in the mideighties, as I recall. I was living in Honoka'a, then a small sugar cane town on the east coast of the Big Island of Hawai'i. Life was good, nice slow pace and I had just begun giving massages so my work was very rewarding for the first time in my life. Anyway, on to the title of this post "Mauna Kea Volcano" and to be continued as "Mauna Kea Summit Adventure".

By this time I had lived on the Big Island for 5 or 6 years, I guess. You know when you live on an island the size of Hawai'i with a mountain or volcano as huge as Mauna Kea or its sister volcano Mauna Loa you kinda go about your life, working and playing around its base not paying much attention it the mountain peak itself. But come winter, yah we have a winter season in Hawai'i, especially the Big Island with its high peaks everything changes.

In winter, usually starting in December the mountain takes on a blanket of white that absolutely glistens in the warm Hawai'ian sun. Now there is no way you can live at the base of that diamond and not notice it. Your eyes are drawn to it whenever the clouds part and it calls to you, come play in the tropical snow!"
