Sean Kingston moved to Intensive Care Unit after watercraft crash

Sean Kingston has been stabilized and moved to the intensive care unit at a hospital after crashing his watercraft into a Miami Beach bridge, his publicist ( Joseph Carozza) said Monday. He also said that Kingston's family is grateful for everyone's prayers and support.

Kingston and a female passenger were injured when the watercraft hit the Palm Island Bridge around 6 p.m. Sunday, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Jorge Pino said. Authorities are investigating the crash, and "nothing at this point would indicate that alcohol played a role," Pino said.

On Twitter, Justin Bieber posted a message of support for Kingston.
"Got my friend Sean Kingston in my prayers tonight," Bieber tweeted early Monday. "A true friend and big bro. Please keep him in your prayers tonight as well."

Genevieve Nnaji wants a man with Johnny Depp's personality and Boris Kodjo's lips

In her recent Interview with New African Woman magazine, Genny was asked;

NAW Mag - "You've been linked romantically to several people, are there any wedding bells in the future?"
Genny - "Yes, I am dating. But there won't be any chiming of any wedding bells, although I want to get married. I am looking for someone who can keep me excited because I get easily bored. I need someone who is there to support me, who is confident. Anyone who's with me needs to be confident. I haven't got time to be massaging any man's ego. My ideal man is someone with a Johnny Depp personality and with Boris Kodjo's lip (laughs)." Genevieve said in her interview with New African Woman magazine.

Dear Reader,
If you can, please give examples of  men with Johnny Depp personality and Boris Kodjo's lips.

Mr. Kaves Shares a Mark Mahoney Portrait

A couple weeks back, I ran into Michael Kaves on 3rd Avenue, a couple blocks away from his shop, Brooklyn Made Tattoo. Kaves is also one of the founding members of The Lordz of Brooklyn. I know Kaves from around the neighborhood, and although I've never been tattooed by him, I have been under the needle in his shop and have had the pleasure of seeing him work first-hand and close-up on other clients.

He's familiar with Tattoosday and wanted to share a tattoo with us here on the site. Check it out:

Located on Kaves' upper right arm, this brilliant tattoo was inked by the legendary Mark Mahoney.

Kaves explained he had gone out to Los Angeles a couple months back and worked at Mahoney's renown shop, the Shamrock Social Club. They had a big launch for a limited edition tattoo pigment - "Mark Mahoney's Shamrock Green". He was there, working on St. Patrick's Day for the official launch.

Mahoney, known to many as the " founding father" of single-needle black and gray tattooing,  tattooed this portrait for Kaves, which took about twelve hours from start to finish.

And who is the woman tattooed on his arm? "It's my grandmother, Marie," he explained, "from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, right here on Third Avenue, 1945."

Kaves' own tattooing work first appeared on Tattoosday back in 2008 here. Most recently, his work has appeared here. This is, however, the first time we have been honored to share a tattoo by Mark Mahoney.

Thanks to Kaves for sharing this phenomenal tattoo by an American master, here with us on Tattoosday!

Repost for Memorial Dsy: A Traditional Naval Tattoo on a 21st Century Ship

This post originally appeared on November 7, 2009. I felt it was appropriate to re-post on Memorial Day, 2011:

The USS New York was put into service today by the United States Navy.

Her hull was forged with steel salvaged from the rubble of the World Trade Center.

It's a momentous occasion indeed, and several crew members were in attendance with dignitaries earlier this week at the World Series.

As is happens, I noticed a gentleman in uniform outside of Madison Square Garden earlier in the week and he had this tattoo on both hands:

Turns out, the tattoo was modeled after this naval pin, which represents the rank of Boatswain's Mate, worn on the lapel:

The gentleman, whose name is Fred, serves on the USS New York, as the more commonly-known title of Ships Bos'n, and it seems appropriate to post this tattoo today as the ship officially enters the naval fleet.

Fred has been in the service for 26 years, and has seven or eight tattoos all told.

As Ships Bos'n he works with mission systems on amphibious maneuvers.

The crossed anchors are traditional naval insignia and, even though he drew this design himself and they weren't inked in a traditional tattoo shop, he recognizes the crossed anchors as symbols of his dedication to the trade.

I thank Fred for his service to our country, as well as his willingness to contribute to Tattoosday. We wish him well as he serves with pride on the USS New York!

Happy Birthday

Life is War

Back in April, I met Joshua outside of Penn Station, and he shared this, one of his five tattoos:

This forearm tattoo, exemplifies Joshua's philosophy that life is war: "you have to go through war to get where you're going."

An ex-girlfriend drew it up for him and then he had it tattooed by Jamie at Bullseye Tattoo Shop in Staten Island, New York.

Thanks to Joshua for sharing this tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Chad and the City

I met Chad one afternoon in April outside of Madison Square Garden. He shared this tattoo which is on his left shin:

As one might have guessed, Chad is a huge fan of the former HBO series Sex and the City and this is one of a large number of tattoos that he has. When I asked how many he had, he quipped “I have no clue.”

Chad’s work was inked by Eileen Fabbricatore at Lady Luck Tattoo in Aurora, Colorado.

Thanks to Chad for sharing these tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

HELPP!!! Racism at it's peak - "White bosses call us BLACK MONKEYS"

From Punch Nigeria

Some Nigerians working at Nigerdock Nigeria Plc, Snake Island, Lagos, have accused one of their white bosses, Mr. Nicholas Marriot, of racially abusing them, calling them “black monkeys.” They claimed that Marriot use the derogatory term while expressing his displeasure about the quality of jobs done by some workers.

how will u feel when someone calls you this

The workers said although racial epithets were often used by Marriot, a Briton, and his partner, Mr. Dennis Dale, the highest form of abuse they had ever received occured on Saturday when Marriot called them black monkeys.

The workers, who protested on Wednesday to register their anger, said apart from racial abuse and discrimination, the company’s welfare policy was not labour-friendly.

A spokesperson of the workers and a welder in the offshore department, Mr. Merry Eokula, told PUNCH METRO that the problem had persisted for long but they chose to endure so as not to give the impression that Nigerians were not accommodating.

Eokula said, “We decided to speak out on Saturday when they told us that we were black monkeys. It occurred when we were having a morning safety analysis programme where we talk to one another about the best and safest way to go about our work.

“It was during the exercise that Marriot came and another man, Dennis Dale, came along and said we had to go back to work immediately. Marriot asked why we liked to gather unnecessarily with our ‘black monkey’ attitude all the time. They complained that the quality of work we did was substandard and so on. They used foul languages at us.

“Dale even went further to say he was a Republican and because of that, when he gave an order, people were supposed to promptly obey.”

The workers said whenever they did anything that did not go down well with their expatriate bosses, the company security would be asked to walk them out of the premises.

“They do not appreciate what we do here and they make derogatory remarks at the slightest provocation. They have been enslaving, insulting and pushing us to the walls for a long time and we can no longer bear it. We don’t want the foreigners to see Nigerians as unruly, that is why we have been very cautious in our conduct,” one of the workers said.

They said the ‘black monkey’ episode was reported to the Chief Security Officer of Nigerdock, a Nigerian identified simply as Mr. Eyo, who in turn reported the matter to the company’s Managing Director, Mr. Chris Benett.

The workers, who displayed placards with inscriptions to make their feelings known, alleged among many other things that they were not enjoying the privileges their counterparts in other companies were enjoying.

An employee, who craved anonymity, said he had been working in the company for nine years and had never gone on leave once, adding that the company was in the habit of sacking them arbitrarily.

He said, “If one sustains an injury while at work, one could be sacked. If one says or does anything that does not go down well with a white boss, one could be sacked.

“We are paid like slaves. We are treated like casual workers, while we are the ones doing all the work. It is a violation of the Nigerian local content policy.

“For a foreigner to come to Nigeria and call us ‘black monkeys’ is an insult to our President and all our leaders because that implies they are monkeys too. It is an insult to all Nigerians. We have worked with other foreigners who were very good people before. Nigeria is a peace-loving nation and we don’t want to pass a wrong message across.

“We are calling on the Nigerian government to save us in Nigerdock. This place is called Snake Island, but we call it ‘Slave Island,’ because we are nothing but slaves here the way we are being treated.”

The workers appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress to take up the case.

“We urge the government to send a delegate here as soon as possible to verify our claims,” another worker said.

A source in the company, who was not one of the protesters, said what the workers experienced on a daily basis was colonisation, adding that their sufferings on a daily basis was unimaginable.

When he was contacted on the phone, the company’s Administrative Manager, Mr. Joe Boulous, simply said, “The allegations have been investigated and found to be untrue and unsubstantiated.”

When asked to make a specific response to the alleged anti-labour welfare policy of the company, he said the information provided to our correspondent was not enough for him to verify such ”general” allegations.

Boulous said, “This is a general question. I can’t verify the claim unless you can give me the name of the particular employee who said he had not gone on leave for nine years.

“We are leaders in this industry. The company will never do such a thing to its employees.”

Stephen's Killer Klown

One of the significant changes in the chronology of Tattoosday was the discovery that the Amtrak waiting area in Penn Station was a wonderful place for inkspotting, not just on rainy days, but whenever I had the chance to pass that way.

Stopping someone on the streets of New York City, especially when they are in a hurry to get somewhere, can be challenging. I have discovered that people waiting for their trains, with nothing but time on their hands, are much more likely to be open to discussing their tattoos with strangers like me.
What’s nice, as well, as the trains running out of the Penn Station Amtrak hub go to Boston, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and beyond (New Orleans and Toronto are possible rail destinations).

In early April, I ran into Stephen, who was visiting from Auckland, New Zealand. He has ink on both arms, one leg, and the top of his back, so there was a lot to choose from, once he consented to sharing one of his tattoos.

He offered up this horror-themed illustration, on the upper section of his right arm:

The clown with a cleaver is one of those funny/scary images that appeals to fans of the horror genre. Stephen liked the image and collaborated with the tattoo artist, Jamie Thorburn, to come up with the final design.

Thanks to Stephen for sharing this cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Comparing the American slum to the Nigerian Ghetto

I am sure most of you are familiar with stories and images of a Nigerian struggling child trying to survive, some stay under bridges and the lucky ones "in the ghetto" If you are not familiar with the picture, I'll recommend you go watch some Nigerian Movies (FREE) on Youtube (Powered by Nollywood Love).

 Brianna Karp
Now I just read the Yankee Version of being a homeless child. I read the story of how a 23 year old Brianna Karp moved into an old trailer a relative had left her (the relative committed suicide earlier that year) after losing her administrative job in the summer of 2008. It got interesting when I read that she was living without electricity, regular showers, home-cooked food, and most basic conveniences, I mean that's very harsh.

On the other hand;

Brianna has a Laptop, Internet access (she blogs about her experience), she tweets, she once visited her bf in Scotland - which turned out to be her lowest moment, she has also written a book while living in the slum -u mean all these in the slum
The story sparked a lot of controversial comments as usual ok ok ok..go read it yourself

Our 1000th Post! David's Mermaid and Seahorse Blow Us Away......

Pardon the royal "we," but this is our 1000th post, and we feel a little celebratory.

To honor this milestone, we are sharing this amazing half sleeve belonging to David:

This astonishing work is the creation of artist Erick Lynch at Redemption Tattoo in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

David said that he had wanted a mermaid, as his wife loves mermaids, and that Lynch's work reflects a traditional Japanese style, thus the female figure appearing as a pearl diver, which is more in line with Japanese artistic tradition.

The whole of the half sleeve represents about 12 hours of work, in David's estimation, which includes the inside of the biceps, and this phenomenally vivid seahorse:

David points to Erick Lynch's use of white highlights in the seahorse, which really makes it "pop".

All in all, this is a remarkable piece of work that we are honored to have as our 1000th post here at Tattoosday. Thanks to David for sharing it and to Erick Lynch for his mastery of the art form!

Deadly Tornados Hit 3 States Killing hundreds

A violent storm system powering through a wide swath of the Midwest and South on Wednesday spawned tornadoes and powerful winds that turned homes into splintered wreckage and cars into crumpled shells and killed at least 13 people.

The system, which followed closely behind the one that spawned the massive twister that struck Joplin, Mo., and killed more than 120 people, moved into the Oklahoma City area Tuesday evening as worried commuters rushed home from work.

Several tornadoes touched down in the state's largest city and its suburbs, killing at least eight people and injuring at least 60 others, including three children who were in critical condition, authorities said.

The storms killed two people in Kansas before moving eastward and killing three others in Arkansas. The system was centered over Missouri and Arkansas and southern Illinois early Wednesday and moving into western parts of Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi. The National Weather Service placed much of Illinois and Indiana under a tornado watch.

President Goodluck Jonathan - The NYSC is here to STAY

Posted Via his Facebook Page today, the president said

As has become my habit, I took time to read your comments on this page and noticed that a number of you called for the proscription of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The deaths of members of the NYSC during the post-election violence is condemnable and we need to prevent a reoccurrence, but in doing that, there should be an awareness that the NYSC is a force for good and we must never sacrifice what is good for what is convenient for the moment. Leadership is about taking in the big picture.

The NYSC scheme was birthed by the Gowon administration as a means of enhancing Nigeria’s unity by making Nigeria’s youths spend a period of sacrificial living in parts of the country outside the immediate location in which they were raised. And this scheme is to a large extent achieving its purpose.

We need more of anything that will build unity in Nigeria and it is not possible to build unity without unifying vehicles. The NYSC like the Nigerian Army, Navy, Air force and Police are unifying vehicles.

These vehicles serve their purpose because they endure trying times seeing as the core value behind their creation is sacrifice. And just as we recognize fallen heroes of the Armed Forces on Remembrance Day, we will never forget our fallen heroic Youth Corpers.  The five million Naira compensation to their families will not bring them back but it is a gesture to show that we mourn with them. We will do all that is humanly possible to bring justice to their killers. However, in doing this, we must retain the scheme and improve on it so that it becomes a living memorial to the sacrifice of Nigeria’s youth to the growth, progress and unity of Nigeria.

Christine's Sleeve of Colorful Flowers and Butterflies

Some posts don't need a lot of explaining. I met Christine on 3rd Avenue in Bay Ridge earlier this month, and she shared these stunning tattoos, perfect for celebrating on a warm spring day:

The Tiger lily and Red-spotted Purple butterfly above are only the top section of a full sleeve:

The flowers on the forearm are Violets, which span the inside of Christine's arm, as well:

And that's an American Painted Lady butterfly in the ditch.

This amazing, and vibrantly colorful sleeve was inked by Tim O'Connor at The Red Parlour in the Woodside section of Queens, New York. We featured work by Tim and The Red Parlour once before, here, back in 2008.

Thanks to Christine for sharing her wonderful sleeve with us here on Tattoosday!
